Shepton Mallet's budding artists are being encouraged to pick up their pencils and cameras as the Shepton Vignettes project returns for another year.

The initiative, which aims to capture the essence of the town and its surroundings, is part of a broader effort to showcase Shepton's distinctive charm through the eyes of its residents.

Last year's project, led by Rev Gill Sakakini and artist Jack Greenwood, focused on portrait sittings at Create@#8. This time around, it's expanding to include landscape drawing and portrait workshops run by Rev Sakakini and local artist Steve Cobbin. The pair are inviting locals to create their own depictions of Shepton's iconic buildings, hidden gems, and scenic views.

Supported by Shepton Mallet Town Council, Shepton Community Bookshop, and the Somerset Community Foundation, the project has plenty of incentives for people to get involved. There are prizes on offer in three categories: £400 for the best adult submissions in painting/drawing and photography, £250 for the 12-17 age group, and a one-on-one session with an artist for those aged 11 and under.

The workshops kick off on 19th October and will run throughout the autumn, offering both children and adults the chance to hone their skills and take part in creating artwork that celebrates the town. Participants can choose to focus on anything from historical buildings and local landmarks to unique perspectives on Shepton's heritage.

Entries will be displayed at Create@#8 in January, where visitors can vote for their favourite pieces to win the 'People's Prize'. The winning and highly commended entries will also be included in a published book, preserving the creative spirit of Shepton for years to come.

The deadline for submissions is 30th November, with more details available on the SMart website and social media channels. Locals are encouraged to get involved and show what makes Shepton Mallet special.
