Dog owners in Shepton Mallet are being warned not to throw sticks for their pooch to protect their pet from potentially life-threatening injuries... and avoid a hefty bill.

Shepton Vets has treated three patients with injuries caused by sticks in just one week.

Vet Martin Law told Shepton Mallet Nub News that prior to the trio turning up at the surgery he hadn't seen a case in more than six months.

"It seemed quite odd for there to be three stick-related injuries in one week - two in one evening," he said.

"As they were during coronavirus lockdown there is a possibility it could be related.

"Owners want to make the most of their one walk a day and are looking for something to stimulate their dogs - but throwing sticks is not recommended.

"We strongly advise owners to seek another form of play.

"If their dog likes to pick up sticks then try to redirect its behaviour by taking out a ball or something else to keep it entertained.

"It's a no brainer - stick injuries can cause potentially fatal injuries and invariably come with a big bill.

"To treat a relatively straightforward patient with a good outcome could cost around £500."

Two of the dogs had puncture wounds requiring them to be X-rayed under anaesthetic to check for any lodged splinters of wood.

The third had a piece of stick stuck in the soft tissue at the back of its mouth which had to be removed.

"Two had sticks thrown for them and the third has a penchant for finding them and picking them up," Martin said.

"If shards of dirty, rotten stick get stuck or rupture the airway or oesophagus there is a potential for cellulitis - infection - which can have fatal consequences.

"Fortunately all three dogs we treated, despite having significant injuries, have made a full recovery."

Shepton Vets has launched an e-consultation service available for the duration of the coronavirus lockdown.

The 15-minute online consultation, via Zoom, will enable the team to deal with some of the more routine problems patients may experience.

An appointment for a full examination at the Allyn Saxon Drive surgery will be arranged if necessary.

If your pet has an urgent condition call 01749 343955 or 01749 678420.
