A spirited local campaign to "free the knitty-gritty" in Shepton Mallet, which began with a cheeky window display at The Hive café and haberdashery, has now captured the national spotlight.
The story, initially covered by Nub News, has since been picked up by major outlets including the BBC, Daily Mail, and Daily Mirror, turning a local curiosity into a nationwide conversation.
The display, crafted by a local knitting circle at The Hive, featured naked knitted figures of a policeman, vicar, Rastafarian, a woman with pearls, and a bearded man.
The initiative aimed to raise funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance but faced criticism when a local resident expressed concern about the figures, stating she didn't want her grandchildren "looking at genitals on their way to school."
In response, The Hive covered the figures' private parts with small placards that also promote the work of the Air Ambulance, sparking a local campaign dubbed 'Save The Hive Five'.
Despite the controversy, the café's owner, Mike Alford, maintained that the display was meant in good fun and not intended to offend.
"It's all just laughs and tongue in cheek. Life is too serious, and it's good to have a laugh," he said.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the controversy actually boosting donations.
"We've made about £100 for the charity just today with people trotting in," Mike said, highlighting the community's support for both the cause and the display.
Mike says the ladies have put "a lot of work" into the display, and explains: "It is the first window they put in for this year, and it has caused a bit of a stir amongst a couple of people but for one figure it takes about one week. It takes a while to do and they are not easy at all."
This is the first window display of the year, and there will be three others throughout 2024 - with the theme for the next display being 'Glastonbury Festival'.
Mike added he is "excited" but a bit nervous for the next window display.
