Shepton Mallet's town signage project, a collaborative effort between Shepton Mallet Town Council and Astra Group, has been recognised at the Sign & Wrap Awards in Birmingham.
This national event celebrates the crème de la crème of sign-making across the UK and Ireland, with Astra Group clinching the Wayfinding Project of the Year title for its exceptional work in the historic market town.
Working closely with Placemarque, wayfinding experts, Astra Group was charged with the intricate technical design, manufacture, and installation of an array of architectural wayfinding signs. This initiative aimed to guide visitors seamlessly through Shepton Mallet, enhancing foot traffic to its historic core. Placemarque's contribution involved developing a comprehensive wayfinding and interpretation strategy, ensuring the sign designs beautifully complemented the town's unique and dynamic spirit.
This marks the second year running that Astra Group and Placemarque have received this coveted accolade, having previously been celebrated for their project at Wellington Place, Leeds.
The panel of judges at the 2024 Sign & Wrap Awards lauded Astra Group's submission for its clear and effective wayfinding solution, praising its aesthetic harmony with the environment and durability.
"Aesthetically pleasing to the environment with great contrast. Signage that is going to last the test of time having been built with longevity in mind," they noted, highlighting the project's design and longevity.
Jim Kerr, CEO of Astra Group, said: To have been awarded Wayfinding Project of the Year once was a proud moment. To be recognised twice and for the second-year running is a phenomenal achievement. It is absolute testament to the dedication and expertise of the entire Astra Group team who work tirelessly to deliver creative and innovative signage solutions for every client."
Shepton Mallet Town Council's Project Officer, Tara Jessop, said the signs had made a positive impact it has had on the town. "Shepton Mallet has a rich history that warrants celebration.
"The wayfinding signage designed, produced, and installed by Astra Group not only successfully addresses the challenge of reorientating visitors towards the town centre, but also complements the town's identity, combining modern and innovative designs with historical context to create a lasting impact. We could not be more pleased to work together on this scheme and see Astra Group recognised in these prestigious awards. It is thoroughly deserved."
Sue Manley, Strategy Director and Founder of Placemarque, echoed the sentiment, adding, "Being recognised for what we love doing is just the icing on the cake. We're so proud to help guide people to both explore and get to where they need to be and to be recognised at the industry's most prestigious event is simply wonderful."
The project features a range of signage including large map monoliths and directional signs, all crafted to reflect Shepton Mallet's 'quirky and bold' character.
