Shepton Mallet’s historic Friday Market is on the lookout for new traders

Shepton Mallet's Friday Market has entered a new chapter, with the town council officially taking over its operation from the start of April — and they're calling on a few key traders to help complete the line-up.
Running every Friday from 8.30am to 1pm in the Market Place, the event brings together a lively mix of local traders offering fresh produce, handmade goods, and street food, all set against the backdrop of the town's historic "Shambles".
Since the takeover, the council has welcomed several new faces, but say they're still looking for a few essentials to round things off — including a pet supplies stall, a bread baker, and someone specialising in olives, antipasti, nuts or preserves.
"Please get in touch if you can help," a spokesperson said. "We're keen to keep building on the market's success and offer residents even more variety."
Dating back to 1318, Shepton's Friday Market has long served as both a community meeting point and a hub for local produce, crafts and essentials. Today, it remains a key part of the town's weekly rhythm — and shoppers are encouraged to come down, browse the stalls, and support the town's independent businesses.
Traders currently include Harts Natural Seafood, Browns & Daughters Fruit and Veg, Parsons Ridge, Bath Soft Cheese Co, Cream & Crumble, and Thomas D'Arcy Plants, alongside a rotating line-up of casual stalls selling everything from fudge and chilli sauces to plants, cakes, and gifts.
Free parking is available for one hour at nearby Paul Street and Great Ostry Street car parks.
