Speeding drivers in Shepton Mallet are being warned – the town's first ever Community Speedwatch team is now on patrol.

Armed with high-vis jackets and speed monitoring kits, local volunteers have joined forces with Avon and Somerset Police to keep an eye on hotspots and remind motorists to slow down.

Neighbourhood officers hailed the group as "local heroes" for giving up their time to protect others and cut dangerous driving. The scheme is about prevention rather than punishment, but details of repeat offenders can be passed to police.
