Shepton Mallet is witnessing a significant community-driven effort to rejuvenate the Amulet Theatre.
The recent public survey, which has so far had 330 responses, revealed an emphatic 87% support for restoring the theatre as a community hub. This push comes in response to the theatre's limited public utility since its transition to private ownership in 2011.
The survey is a critical component of a broader initiative to measure and secure community backing. This step is essential for the formulation of a detailed business plan and for securing grant funding. The initiative has also seen over 50 individuals stepping up to contribute to the theatre's revival.
The theatre's restoration project is eligible for funding from the Community Ownership Fund.
To move forward successfully, the project requires robust community support and a feasible business plan. The project presents an opportunity for residents to invest in their community's future through share purchases. This local investment will be augmented by grants, loans, and donations.
The vision for the Amulet Theatre is to create a versatile space serving multiple community needs. Proposed plans suggest the ground floor could become a vibrant centre for craft markets, art workshops, a museum, tourist information, and a café. Meanwhile, the first floor might see the return of the theatre to its former glory, hosting cinema and live music events.

Feedback from the survey reflects a wide range of community aspirations for the theatre.
Respondents expressed a desire to see the Amulet transformed into a vital community space, with one noting, "It's such a waste of a great building."
Another respondent reminisced about the theatre's role in their youth, highlighting its potential popularity. The importance of the theatre as a catalyst for transformative change in Shepton was also echoed.
A pragmatic voice in the survey argued for the economic revival of the Amulet, stating, "We have two choices: bring it back into economic use or demolish it."
Others advocated for a varied program that would attract both locals and visitors, ensuring the theatre's inclusive and wide-reaching appeal.
These community insights are instrumental as the project team prepares to apply for a development grant in January, aiming for the main Community Ownership Fund in April.
