Shepton Mallet Town Council takes over historic Friday Market – free pitches for new traders

Shepton Mallet's historic Friday Market is set for a fresh start as Shepton Mallet Town Council takes over its operation from April 2025—and to celebrate, new traders can set up for free for the first three months.
Dating back to 1318, the market has been a weekly tradition in the town, offering a mix of fresh food, local crafts, seasonal goods, and essential items. As much a social occasion as a shopping event, it sees the Market Place come to life each Friday as traders set up around the "Shambles".
The market will continue to run every Friday from 8am to 2pm, with easy access from the one-hour free parking on Great Ostry Street and Paul Street.
Shepton Mallet Town Council is looking for new traders to bring fresh energy to the market.
To encourage more stalls, pitches will be free from April to June. After this period, a 3x3m pitch will cost £28 for casual traders and £25 for regular traders (those trading at least 40 out of 48 markets per year).
The council also wants to welcome buskers, entertainers, and workshop hosts to help build a lively atmosphere in the town centre.
Anyone interested in becoming a trader can apply via the form here: sheptonmallet-tc.gov.uk/fridaymarket
