Shepton Mallet's Christmas Lights and Tree
Shepton Mallet's Christmas Lights and Tree

It was a pleasure to introduce the Reverend Jonathan Hunter Dunn to say a few words and the Fairy Godmother to lead the countdown at our Christmas lights switch on event last Friday. Which went ahead after a few technical niggles and our contractors fighting through traffic.

Everyone, whilst apprehensive for the switch on was patient for a few minutes whilst Mendip Brass Band played jolly Christmas tunes until we could flick the switch and the centre of town was finally lit up with our new lights. Thanks to those who came out and for buying mince pies (kindly donated by Denela's) and mulled cider (donated by Stone's Cider), supporting the Rotary Club who served it up.

The festive activities continue this week; today sees the launch of the Christmas Tree festival at the Baptist church, the two-day pop-up Christmas shopping event at Kilver Court and this weekend there is lots going on in the marketplace, library and other venues in and around town; check out the Winter Events page on our website for more information.

Special mention must go to Chuck McGrew and the crew at The Good Life Projects CIC for the upcoming Windsor Wonderland Christmas market on Sunday. Lots of market stalls and a chance to meet Santa are promised. Located at Rock Farm at the top of Ham Lane, the event runs from midday until 8pm. Have a look at their Facebook page or website for more details.

Finally, last Tuesday saw a full Town Council meeting with a lot on the agenda; as well as receiving reports from our regular stakeholders, we set-up working parties to review how to develop Collett Park and another group to plan next year's Collett Park Day, Queen's Jubilee and other summer events. We also decided on which Councillors would represent the Council in other organisations throughout the town – whether they be charities, support agencies, schools or community groups.

Councillors put in the time and effort to enhance the life of our residents, but we need constant input from residents to ensure we are contributing effectively so if you would like to understand how the Council could help you or your group, do please drop any one of us a line – our contact details are on our website or on the notice boards around town.

Until next time,

Matt Harrison

Chair, Shepton Mallet Town Council
