A free walking festival that caters for all the family will be based in Shepton Mallet over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The event is the Mendip Ramblers' annual free Walking Festival, and this year it will feature 12 walks of varying lengths.

A spokesperson for the Mendip Ramblers said: "Who knows what this year's August Bank Holiday will bring?

"A late heatwave, a trip to the beach, a barbecue, a long wait on the M5, a shopping bonanza/nightmare, a downpour?

"Well, of course, the reality is that none of us know. But, Mendip Ramblers do know for sure that we will be walking in Shepton Mallet on all three days of the August Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

"And, we invite all walkers, old and young, locals and visitors, fellow Ramblers and non-Ramblers, to join in our annual free Walking Festival.

"On each day there will be four walks on offer, with two short walks each day. These are ideal for new walkers, children with their families, and those who just want to wander at a leisurely pace.

"We will be based at the Leisure Centre in Shepton Mallet where there is ample free parking. The walks take in some lesser known parts of the town before heading out into the delightful quiet Somerset countryside.

"All routes have been checked and the Working Party have been out to ensure that the paths are as accessible as possible. The weather will be fine (fingers crossed) and there will be tea and cake for all.

"So, this is our bargain offer to all walkers; choose your day, put on your boots, bring your hat and your water, and come to Shepton Mallet.

"You don't have to be a Rambler, you can just ramble along behind the leader. And, it's free."
