Shepton Mallet residents can now make full use of Somerset's Slinky bus service, an innovative demand-responsive transport option designed for those with limited or no access to public transport. Ideal for reaching shops, visiting friends and family, or attending medical appointments, the Slinky bus provides a flexible solution for rural transport needs.

The Slinky service, previously limited to non-car owners, is now open to all residents from 1 September, making it a great choice for anyone looking to avoid the hassle of driving. Passengers simply need to register online, then book their journey by phone with 24 hours' notice. Concessionary Bus Pass holders and children ages 5-16 receive a 50% fare reduction, with free travel for under-fives.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Lead Member for Transport and Digital at Somerset Council, emphasised the benefits of Slinky for local residents: "Slinky is an incredibly useful option for people in Somerset. It is vital if you don't have transport, but now it also offers a flexible, affordable alternative for people who don't want to use the car, or for younger people who just want to get around more easily without having to rely on a parent."

Shepton Mallet residents are encouraged to register at Register for Slinky - Somerset Council or call 0300 123 2224 for assistance with the registration and booking process.

In addition, Somerset Council is trialling a Digital Slinky service in Langport and Somerton, available 7am-7pm. If successful, this app-based booking system may expand to Shepton Mallet and beyond.
