In a focused effort to address the growing concern of knife crime, the neighbourhood police team in Shepton Mallet took part in Operation Sceptre - a national campaign to reduce knife crime on our streets.

Last week, the police team have proactively engaged with the community, local businesses, and educational institutions to tackle this pressing issue head-on.

One of the key aspects of the campaign involved collaborating with local stores to ensure the responsible display and sale of knives. The Shepton Mallet police team liaised with retailers, emphasising the importance of verifying the age of customers before selling potentially dangerous items.

By fostering a sense of responsibility within the retail sector, the authorities aim to minimise access to knives for individuals who may misuse them.

Police also conducted thorough physical checks of parks, pathways, and areas where knives might be hidden, removing these dangerous items from circulation and deter potential incidents.

The Shepton Mallet police team also actively engaged with schools, recognising the significance of educating young individuals about the consequences of knife crime.

Through informative sessions and open dialogues, students were being encouraged to make informed choices and reject the allure of carrying knives. These efforts are crucial in shaping a safer community and ensuring that young lives are protected from the devastating effects of knife-related violence.

A police spokesperson said: "The resounding message from law enforcement and community leaders is crystal clear: leave the knife at home.

"The streets of Shepton Mallet should not be a place where knives are carried or used. A split-second decision to employ a knife can have life-altering consequences for both the perpetrator and the victim. By working collectively to discourage the presence of knives in our community, we can safeguard lives and build a safer future for all."
