Shepton Mallet prison art show returns next month
By Laura Linham 31st Mar 2026
A powerful prison art exhibition is heading back to Shepton Mallet next month - and entry is completely free.
Art Behind Bars will run at Shepton Mallet Prison from Friday, 1 May to Sunday, 31 May, bringing between 150 and 200 pieces of artwork created by prisoners from across the country to the historic site.
The annual exhibition is being staged in partnership with charity Alabaré and showcases work produced through the Alabaré Burnbake Prison Art Project. Organisers say the project supports rehabilitation by promoting the therapeutic benefits of art.
Visitors will be able to see a wide range of pieces while also gaining a fresh perspective on the former prison and the people behind the artwork. Under the scheme, Alabaré provides the materials, manages sales and splits proceeds equally, with 50 per cent going back to the artist and 50 per cent supporting Alabaré Artworks.
The exhibition is free and open to all, with tickets available to book in advance.
