Shepton Mallet police warn Sur-Ron bikes could be seized
By Laura Linham 18th Jun 2026
Police have warned that Sur-Ron electric bikes could be seized after reports of nuisance riding in Shepton Mallet town centre and nearby open spaces.
The force said its neighbourhood policing team had been made aware of ongoing problems involving Sur-Ron electric bikes being ridden in the town centre and nearby open spaces. Police said the bikes were often being ridden at excessive speeds in areas not suitable for that use, creating "both a nuisance and a significant safety risk to members of the public".
Sur-Ron bikes are not permitted to be ridden on public land unless they are fully road-legal, insured, taxed and ridden by a suitably licensed rider. Police said that where those requirements are not met, the consequences can include the seizure of the bike under police powers.
Neighbourhood officers are actively carrying out patrols in the areas most affected.
The force said it is working closely with the local community to address the concerns and improve safety. Anyone who witnesses dangerous or antisocial riding is being asked to report it to police by calling 999 in an emergency, 101 for non-emergencies, or by making an online report through the Avon and Somerset Police website.
