Work has begun to repair and protect Shepton Mallet's Market Cross following concerns about deteriorating stonework.

The eight-week conservation project started on Monday, 27 July, with fencing and scaffolding now surrounding the scheduled monument in the Market Place.

Specialist inspections were commissioned after small pieces of stone fell from the top of the structure during the winter of 2024/25.

A conservation team will repair damaged stonework, replace unstable sections and repoint parts of the monument using traditional lime mortar.

Moss and other vegetation will be removed, while drainage around the structure will be improved to help prevent further deterioration.

The repairs have been designed by specialist conservation architects and have received the necessary consent from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Shepton Mallet Town Council is overseeing the project in its role as trustee of the Market Cross Charity.

The council said the work had been planned to limit disruption to markets, events, nearby businesses and people living in the town centre.

It said: "We know the fencing won't be the prettiest sight in the Market Place, but it's an essential part of carrying out the work safely."

The project will address the immediate problems with the Market Cross and establish a longer-term maintenance programme for the monument.

Work is expected to be completed during the autumn.

The council added: "Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding while these important conservation works take place. We look forward to revealing a safer and better-protected Market Cross in the autumn."
