Somerset Council's Libraries service is bringing its Winter Coat Exchange scheme at Shepton Mallet Library, offering vital support to those in need of warm clothing as the weather turns colder.
Following the success of last year's initiative, the scheme allows residents to donate or pick up good-quality coats, helping families and individuals manage the rising cost of living. With children back in school, the library is particularly encouraging donations of children's and teen coats that no longer fit, although coats for all ages and sizes are welcome.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture, said: "Following last year's successful launch of this initiative, I am pleased that we are able to run this again as the colder and wet weather is starting to make itself felt and this can be challenging for many, especially those who can't afford to stay warm."
The Winter Coat Exchange scheme, which handed out 904 coats across Somerset last winter, operates with a simple system:
- You can take a coat without making a donation.
- You can donate a coat without taking one.
- All donations must be in good condition and clean.
Donations can be dropped off at Shepton Mallet Library, where the local community is encouraged to get involved.
