A 15-metre bridge, as long as a double-decker bus, has been spectacularly craned into place over the B3136 in Shepton Mallet, marking a significant milestone for Somerset's Strawberry Line.

The project, which aims to create a traffic-free path from the Mendips to the coast, has involved a unique partnership between volunteers, councils, charities, and contractors. This latest development is another step towards connecting Ridge Road to Collett Park in the town centre.

Although the bridge is now in place, it is not yet open to the public. Further works are underway to connect the bridge to new and existing paths, which will offer residents in South Shepton a safer route to the playing fields, scout hut, football club, and Shepton Mallet Community Hospital.

An official opening ceremony, including a ribbon-cutting event, is planned for Friday 8 November 2024.

The construction has been supervised by the volunteer-led charitable organisation Greenways and Cycleroutes, with work carried out by local contractors MP and KM Golding. Volunteers from the Strawberry Line project, along with those from the Friends of Windsor Hill Tunnels, have been crucial in providing key support, assisting with everything from land access negotiations to vegetation clearing, preparatory works, and path maintenance.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Lead Member for Transport and Digital, said: "A huge thank you to our community groups and volunteers for progressing work, your efforts have transformed the disused railway into a vibrant pathway for everyone to use. We have been honoured to support you in making the Strawberry Line a success."

The Strawberry Line project aims to reduce congestion and pollution by encouraging people to walk and cycle instead of driving, promoting active travel and a healthy lifestyle. The new bridge, alongside improvements to Collett Park led by Shepton Town Council and future plans for an arts trail, is expected to give Shepton Mallet a boost for generations to come.
