Shepton Mallet Library is part of an expanded Winter Coat Exchange programme run by Somerset Council, offering free coats to those in need while promoting sustainable living.

The initiative, now in its second year, is open to everyone and encourages donations of good-quality, clean coats for adults and children. Shepton Mallet is one of five libraries newly added to the programme for 2024, alongside Wellington, Minehead, Street, and Langport.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture, said: "The scheme wouldn't work without the generous donations from the community. All participating libraries are open to donations, just drop your coat, or coats, off during opening hours. The coat exchange really does help families, reduce waste, and save money."

Shepton Mallet Library is currently accepting donations, but the library has received fewer coats than some other locations. Local residents are encouraged to contribute, ensuring those in need have access to warm clothing this winter.

The scheme supports Somerset's environmental goals, tying into the 'Buy Nothing New' campaign led by Keep Britain Tidy. By promoting reuse, the initiative helps reduce the environmental impact associated with the production and transport of new items.

Across the 12 libraries participating in the scheme, 546 coats have already been donated, with more than 200 finding new homes.

The programme's simplicity ensures it is accessible to all:

  • You can take a coat without making a donation.
  • You can donate a coat without taking one.
  • All donations must be of good quality and in clean condition.

Donors are asked to hand items directly to staff at Shepton Mallet Library during opening hours.
