The rector at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Shepton Mallet has called on residents in the town to look out for one another as we move out of the national lockdown.
The Rev Jonathan Hunter Dunn, the rector for the Shepton Mallet Benefice, has highlighted how loneliness will still be a big issue as Shepton Mallet moves into Tier 2 of the new coronavirus restrictions from tomorrow (December 2).
Rev Jonathan has urged people to stick to the new rules, but has said that Sheptonians should keep an eye out for residents who might be suffering by being on their own at this time.
He told Shepton Mallet Nub News: "Emerging from Lockdown 2 into Tier 2 feels a bit of an anticlimax.
"However, I note that cases are now a little higher in Mendip so I think we need to accept where we are and keep our focus on getting through this in as good a way as possible.
"This involves keeping to the restrictions but, more than that, looking out for one another. Loneliness is a big social issue at this time more than it is usually.
"If we think of someone, we can send a message or, better still, pick up the phone. If we're feeling lonely, we can reach out.
"We can make agreements to keep in touch at particular times to make sure those who are unwell or infirm have particular care around them.
"In all this, it is helpful to keep the big picture in view. Impressive advances in treatment and vaccination bring us hope as we look to the future.
"We will get through this and, if we take time to reflect on what we might learn from the experience, we may well emerge better for it.
"Obviously, for some, life will have changed forever and they will emerge accompanied with grief. They need our support, love and care for how we treat those in need defines us."
