Shepton Mallet Flood Group launches to support residents

Shepton Mallet Town Council has launched a Flood Group to help residents affected by extreme weather events, following three major floods in the past year. The group, made up of local volunteers, aims to provide practical support, improve flood resilience, and gather accurate data to help mitigate future flooding risks.
Supporting residents during and after floods
The Flood Group has set up an online platform where residents can report flooding incidents, allowing the council to build an accurate record of affected areas. Volunteers will also assist during flood alerts, helping to distribute resources and support those impacted.
A council spokesperson said: "Has your home been affected by a weather-related flood? You're not alone—30 homes in Shepton experienced this last year. To better support affected residents, Shepton Mallet Town Council has formed a Flood Group of local volunteers and launched a website with flood information, plans for mitigation, and a secure way for residents to record their experiences.
"The most reliable source is the affected residents themselves, though some may hesitate to share out of fear of higher insurance costs or negative reactions. If you've been affected by a weather-related flood, please record your details with confidence that they will remain confidential."
The Flood Group's website provides:
- A confidential flood reporting system.
- A database of past flooding incidents to track trends.
- Guidance on flood prevention, including grant opportunities for protective measures and access to sandbags.
- A real-time flood risk warning system, using AI-based monitoring of rainfall and water levels.
Residents can report flooding and access resources here.
Call for volunteers
The group is actively seeking volunteers to become Flood Wardens, helping to provide assistance during flood emergencies and ensuring information reaches vulnerable residents. Those interested in volunteering can contact the Flood Group through the website.
Keeping Shepton's water channels clear
The Town Council is also reminding residents to report blocked drains and water channels to Somerset Council to ensure effective drainage. Keeping these channels clear is vital in preventing further flooding.
Shepton Mallet's Flood Group is a step towards creating a more resilient town, ensuring residents have the resources they need to protect their homes and respond effectively to future flooding events.
