Shepton Mallet firefighters hone crash rescue skills
By Laura Linham 2nd Mar 2026
Firefighters at Shepton Mallet Fire Station have taken part in hands-on road traffic collision (RTC) rescue training using a scrap four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Earlier this month, crews simulated removing a casualty from the vehicle, using hydraulic cutting and stabilisation equipment and other tools carried on standard fire engines. The session was carried out with the support of Pylle Motors Metal Recycling Limited and local volunteer Jamie Rossiter, who prepared the vehicles and facilities for the training.
Station crews said the exercise provided "valuable knowledge" and helped sharpen skills they may need at real RTC call-outs on Shepton Mallet's roads and throughout Mendip.
Road traffic collision response is a key part of fire and rescue preparedness, ensuring firefighters can work safely and efficiently to free trapped casualties following serious crashes.
