A fire crew from Shepton Mallet helped to free a casualty last night (April 16) who got trapped trying to recover a vehicle that had crashed 100 metres off a road near Somerton.

Just before 11.30pm last night, Devon and Somerset Fire Control received a call from the ambulance service requesting assistance to recover one casualty from underneath a vehicle on the B3153 Snap Hill near Somerton.

Fire appliances from Shepton Mallet, Street, Somerton and a Heavy Rescue Vehicle from Glastonbury were quickly mobilised to the incident.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed one casualty trapped at the front end of the vehicle. The casualty was reported to be conscious and crews got to work attempting to stabilise the vehicle.

The casualty was attempting to recover a vehicle that had been left stranded at the incident location approximately 100 metres from the road. The casualty had then become trapped under the vehicle and sustained lower leg injuries.

Crew were able to rescue them from under the vehicle using small tools when they were then assessed by the air ambulance paramedics.

Fire crews used an off road vehicle to transport the casualty to the road where a land ambulance was able to convey them to hospital for treatment.
