Shepton Mallet recorded 121 crimes in January 2026, according to the latest published police figures. That marks an increase from December 2025, when 98 offences were recorded across the town.

Violent crime was the largest category in January, with 59 incidents logged. Other theft and shoplifting were the next highest categories, with 11 offences each. Vehicle crime accounted for nine reports, while public order offences stood at eight.

Police also recorded six incidents of criminal damage and arson, five drug offences, four burglaries and four cases of anti-social behaviour. There was one robbery and three offences listed as other crime.

The crime categories published in monthly statistics are broad groupings. Violent crime can include offences ranging from assault and harassment to more serious incidents. Shoplifting refers to theft from shops and retail premises, while robbery involves theft using force or the threat of force.

Public order offences cover behaviour causing harassment, alarm or distress. Anti-social behaviour relates to incidents affecting quality of life in neighbourhoods. Criminal damage and arson includes deliberate damage to property or the setting of fires. Burglary involves entering a building unlawfully to steal or cause harm. Vehicle crime covers theft of or from vehicles.

Drug offences relate to the possession, supply or production of controlled substances. Other theft can include offences such as theft by finding or theft not falling into specific sub-categories. The "other crime" grouping covers offences that do not sit within the main published categories.

In December 2025, violent crime stood at 46 offences in Shepton Mallet. That month also saw eight incidents of anti-social behaviour, eight shoplifting reports and five burglaries. Police recorded two possession of weapons offences, one bicycle theft and one theft from the person in December, categories which did not appear in January's figures.

Avon and Somerset Police said the statistics are used to monitor trends and deploy officers where they are most needed.
