Shepton Mallet crime figures: Rise in violent incidents but fall in criminal damage.

Shepton Mallet residents have been provided with an update on the town's safety as the latest crime statistics have been released.
These monthly figures offer a comprehensive overview of the reported incidents within the community
The figures are for October 2023, and a total of 99 crimes were recorded in Shepton Mallet, covering a range of categories that provide insights into the nature of incidents in the area.
Among the recorded incidents, Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) accounted for 18 cases, showing an increase from 11 in September. ASB includes behaviours that cause harassment, alarm, or distress to individuals or communities, such as vandalism, noise disturbances, and public nuisance.
Violent Crime comprised 33 incidents, reflecting an increase from 21 in September. This category involves using physical force or the threat of physical force against another person.
Shoplifting incidents numbered 14, up from 6 in September. Shoplifting is stealing items from a shop or store without paying for them.
Criminal Damage and Arson accounted for 4 incidents, decreasing from 12 in September. This category includes actions that destroy property, including vandalism and deliberate firesetting.
Public Order offences stood at 11 incidents, up from 7 in September.
Other Theft recorded 8 incidents, up from 4 in September, encompassing thefts that do not fall under specific categories like burglary or shoplifting. It involves the unlawful taking of someone else's property.
Burglary and Vehicle Crime each accounted for 2 incidents, with no change from September. Burglary involves the unlawful entry into a building with the intent to commit theft, vandalism, or another crime. Vehicle crime includes offences like car theft or breaking into vehicles to steal items.
Drugs and Possession of Weapons each had 2 reported incidents, with no change from September. Drug-related offences encompass illegal drug possession, distribution, or trafficking. Possession of weapons refers to the unlawful possession, including firearms or bladed instruments.
Theft from the Person was reported in 1 incident, with no change from September, referring to thefts directly from individuals, such as pickpocketing.
Lastly, Other Crime accounted for 1 incident, with no change from September, encompassing crimes that do not fit into the specific categories mentioned above.
A police spokesperson commented on the statistics, saying, "The increase in reported incidents in October is a reminder for all of us to remain vigilant and continue working together to maintain the safety and well-being of our community.
"We are dedicated to addressing these issues and ensuring a secure environment for all residents."
