Shepton Mallet child’s park plea brings rockers back
By Laura Linham 12th May 2026
A five-year-old child's love for their local park has helped bring back two much-missed animal rockers in West Shepton.
The youngster was upset after discovering the play equipment had disappeared from a small park on a housing estate.
The family regularly visited the park, and the children were so fond of the rockers they had even given them names.
But the equipment had been removed because of safety concerns linked to its age.
For families living nearby, the loss of two pieces of play equipment from a small local park was a big blow.
The child's mum tried to find out what had happened, but struggled to get answers.
She then contacted Cllr Claire Sully, who took up the issue on the family's behalf.
Cllr Sully raised the matter with Somerset Council before bringing in Cllr Martin Lovell, who sits on both Somerset Council and Shepton Mallet Town Council.
Cllr Lovell then spoke for the family at the relevant Shepton Mallet Town Council committee meeting.
He asked the town council to replace the rockers, even though their upkeep had previously been Somerset Council's responsibility.
The new rockers have now been installed.
Cllr Sully visited them on Saturday, 9 May, and said they looked "splendid".
