A Shepton Mallet charity is asking locals to turn their memories of the town into music, poetry and stories as part of a new project to celebrate the place they call home.

SWEDA, which supports people affected by eating disorders, has launched A Song For Shepton – and they want as many people as possible to take part.

Fundraising manager Gavin Osborn says everyone has a tale to tell. "Shepton has so much going for it and a rich history of creativity, culture and community. Everyone who has lived here, worked here or visited has a story to tell, whether that's school memories from Whitstone or falling in love on a walk through Collett Park. We want to hear them all and celebrate the town that we are proud to call our home."

The idea is simple: write a song, poem or story about Shepton – or a moment that happened here – and it could become part of a special performance during next February's Snowdrops Festival.

"All ages and abilities are encouraged to get involved," Gavin said. "Participants can write a song, story or a poem about the town or reflect on a memory of a great night out or a happy day spent in Shepton, which could then be set to music by others."

It is also a chance to learn more about the charity and the work it does. SWEDA has been based in Shepton for over 30 years, supporting people of all ages across Somerset.
