Shepton Mallet residents are urged to ensure their registration to vote in the forthcoming Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) election.

This election is crucial for appointing the official responsible for the local police force's oversight, ensuring it meets the community's needs. The election spans Bath & North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, Somerset Council, and South Gloucestershire Council areas.

Candidates and their platforms can be reviewed at www.choosemypcc.org.uk, with additional election information at www.avonpccelection.org.uk.

Voter Registration and Deadlines:

The registration deadline is quickly approaching, with a cut-off point at midnight on Tuesday, 16 April. Shepton Mallet's local government is calling on residents, particularly newcomers or those who have recently moved, to confirm their registration in time. The process is accessible and only takes a few minutes online at www.gov.uk/registertovote. The deadline for postal vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday, 17 April.

Understanding the New Voter ID Rules:

The upcoming election introduces the requirement for photo ID at polling stations. Those without suitable ID need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on Wednesday, 24 April. Voters can choose between casting their ballot in person, by post, or by proxy, with the deadline for proxy voting also on Wednesday, 24 April.

Will Godfrey, the Police Area Returning Officer, emphasizes the importance of participating: "Don't miss the chance to have your say in shaping the future of local policing. Remember, no registration by 16 April means no vote."

Residents with questions about their voter registration or the new Voter ID requirements can reach out to the Somerset Council elections office at 0300 123 2224 or via [email protected] for support and information.
