Shepton Mallet artwork heads to Holy Island
By Laura Linham 8th Sep 2026
A community artwork created with hundreds of people in Shepton Mallet is heading hundreds of miles north for a new exhibition on Holy Island.
The Gleaning will be shown at St Cuthbert's Centre on Lindisfarne from Sunday, 27 September to Tuesday, 29 September, as part of the Re-Breathe Arts Festival.
The project brought together people from across Shepton Mallet to create a series of 11 large textile and paper panels, designed to resemble stained glass and tell stories gathered from the community.
Ten of those original panels will now travel to Northumberland and be suspended in front of the windows at St Cuthbert's Centre.
The project will also create a new panel during the Holy Island visit, with festival participants and visitors invited to contribute.
That new work will remain on Holy Island afterwards, creating a lasting link between artists and communities in Somerset and Northumberland.
The touring project responds to Somerset Art Works' 2026 theme of Cultural Connections, with organisers describing the visit as a way of linking creative work made in the South West with communities in the North East.
The original Shepton Mallet project involved hundreds of people over several months, with participants contributing through drawing, writing, textile work and other creative techniques.
The panels explore a range of themes and were first displayed together at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Shepton Mallet.
The Holy Island visit will also include workshops led by Gill Sakakini, Polly Hall, Fiona Campbell and Rosalind Teesdale-Ives.
Further information about the tour and workshops is available through The Gleaning project website.
The Gleaning will be at St Cuthbert's Centre, Lindisfarne, from 27 to 29 September 2026.
