Shepton drivers face 30mph limit on Hincombe Hill
By Laura Linham 29th Jun 2026
Drivers using Hincombe Hill near Shepton Mallet are being warned of a temporary 30mph speed limit while overhead power line work takes place.
Somerset Council has made a temporary traffic order for the road, which comes into force on Friday, 3 July. The restriction is linked to overhead power line upgrade works and will only apply when the temporary signs are in place.
The work itself is expected to take place on Thursday, 9 July, between 9 am and 5 pm. It is scheduled to last for one day, although drivers should allow a little extra time if they use the route during the working hours.
The order applies to a stretch of Hincombe Hill from 223 metres east of its junction with Eastcombe Farm Lane, heading east for 180 metres. The road is in the parish of Batcombe, but is used by drivers travelling in and around the Shepton Mallet area.
Connect It Utility Services is carrying out the work on behalf of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks. Somerset Council said emergency vehicles will be exempt from the restriction where necessary.
The temporary order can legally remain in force for up to 18 months, although the planned works are expected to be completed in a day. Drivers are being asked to follow the temporary signs and take care while crews are working.
Anyone seeking more information about the works can contact Connect It Utility Services on 01489 535600.
