Shepton councillors warn of 'death trap' flooding on Croscombe road
Shepton Mallet Town Council has expressed serious concerns about persistent flooding on the road between Shepton Mallet and Croscombe, warning that it poses a significant danger as winter approaches.
The issue, which councillors described as "constantly wet" and prone to freezing at the last town council meeting, has been flagged with Somerset Council numerous times, but no action has been taken.
Councillor Matthew Harrison described the situation as dire: "It's the worst bit of highways flooding in town. It's constantly wet, and I fear it's going to become a death trap once the ice hits."
The flooding originates from a blocked culvert, which causes water to flow across the road near a waterfall. The issue worsens during peak traffic times. "Cars go through the water, creating two-metre bow waves during rush hour," said Councillor Kai-Thomas Roth. "It's a major hazard now and will become even more dangerous when it freezes."
The problem has already led to accidents, with a car reportedly going through a hedge last winter. "It's pure luck that we didn't have worse ice last year," added Councillor Edric Hobbs. "If we have a hard winter, someone will get seriously injured or worse. This should have been dealt with long ago."
Despite multiple reports, including videos and photographs, councillors expressed frustration over the lack of response from Somerset Council. "I find it staggering that they haven't reacted," said Councillor Roth. "Highways say they're overspent and overworked, but that's not an acceptable excuse for a death trap."
The council has urged residents to report the issue through Somerset Council's online portal, hoping that increased reports will spur action.
Councillor Harrison suggested: "If everyone reports it, they might finally take notice. It's just a matter of time before this turns into a serious accident."
