Plans for a new McDonald's drive-thru in Shepton Mallet will come before town councillors tonight, Tuesday, 18 August.

McDonald's Restaurants Ltd has applied to build a freestanding restaurant and takeaway with a drive-thru at Haskins Retail Park in Townsend, with the proposal due to be considered by Shepton Mallet Town Council's Town Development and Planning Committee from 7 pm.

The application, 2026/1388/FUL, also includes car parking, landscaping, customer order displays and associated works.

Plans would also change the use of the former car showroom at the retail park to create two retail units, alongside alterations to vehicle parking areas.

It is the only planning application specifically listed for councillors to consider at tonight's meeting.

The Town Council does not decide whether the development can go ahead. Somerset Council is the planning authority, but Shepton Mallet councillors can submit a formal response supporting or objecting to the scheme and must give planning reasons for their position.

The committee's agenda says councillors can take factors including road safety, traffic and highways, parking, noise, design, landscape, residential amenity and the effect on the appearance of the area into account when making their response.

The McDonald's proposal was validated in July and has already been advertised through Somerset Council's public planning notices.

There is another town-centre item on tonight's agenda, with councillors also due to receive notice of an application for a new premises licence at The Town Yard, 6 and 8 Town House. The deadline for representations on that application is Friday, 4 September.

Tonight's meeting will take place in the committee room at Shape on Cannards Grave Road and is open to the public. It is scheduled to run from 7 pm to 9 pm, although the planning agenda itself anticipates the listed business finishing at around 7.20 pm.

Somerset Council will ultimately decide whether planning permission is granted.
