Dog owners in Shepton Mallet have been cautioned about the risks of leaving their pets unattended in public areas, particularly in crowded spaces such as Collett Park.

The recent improvement in weather and facilities at Collett Park has led to an increase in community use, with people of all ages enjoying the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

However, concerns have been raised about the number of dogs being brought to the park, some of which are being left tied up while their owners enter the play area.

In a gentle reminder to the community, authorities have highlighted that both dogs and children can be unpredictable, and even a placid and much-loved family pet can react with a bite or nervous aggression if startled or attacked by unwelcome hands. The sensory overload of a busy environment can also cause out-of-character behaviors in dogs that are otherwise fine at home.

When a dog is left tied up and alone, with no way to retreat, it may become defensive and aggressive, putting other park-goers at risk. Owners are reminded that they remain legally responsible for their dog when out in public and may be committing the offense of allowing their dog to be dangerously out of control if an incident occurs and they are not in a position to stop it or have not taken precautions such as using a muzzle.

Under section 3(1) of the 1991 Act, if any dog is dangerously out of control in any place, including all private property, the owner, or person for the time being in charge of the dog, is guilty of a summary offense. This offense becomes aggravated and is triable either way if the dog injures any person or assistance dog while out of control.

A spokesperson for the council said, "We are pleased to see an increase in the use of Collett Park with the improvement in weather and the facilities available. However, we want to remind pet owners that they have a legal responsibility to keep their dogs under control and ensure all park users' safety.

"We urge all pet owners to supervise their dogs and not leave them unsupervised while in the park."By working together, the community can ensure that Collett Park remains a safe and enjoyable space for everyone to use."
