On Christmas Eve the fire service were called out in the early afternoon to numerous reports of a fire at Burcott Lane, Coxley Wick close to Wells. There were many calls reporting a terrace property on fire which had then spread.

Fire engines from Wells, Glastonbury and Street were quickly mobilised. As the fire rapidly developed there were four pumps in action and on arrival, crews requested a further two fire engines to attend for breathing apparatus and personnel. These were mobilised from Shepton Mallet and Cheddar.  An aerial ladder platform was also requested and mobilised from Bridgwater. The fire spread to three terrace properties and needed a total of all the fire crews, using breathing apparatus, two compressed air foam systems, one hose reel jet and one main jet. There was 20 per cent fire damage and 80 per cent water damage to one property, 100 per cent fire damage to the first floor and roof of a second property and 10 per cent fire damage to the roof and 20 per cent smoke damage to the third property. The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
