Police in Shepton Mallet have launched a new trailer marking initiative aimed at tackling rural theft and making it harder for criminals to target farms and countryside properties.

The operation, carried out by the Frome and Shepton Mallet Neighbourhood Policing Teams with support from the Rural Crime Team and funding from the National Farmers Union (NFU), focuses on improving the traceability and security of trailers through clear and unique identification.

Measures include engraving serial numbers, fitting GPS trackers, and applying visible paint markings or decals to make trailers easier to identify. Officers say these steps are effective both in deterring theft and in helping recover stolen property.

Residents are also being encouraged to register their trailers to support swift identification in the event of a theft.

A police spokesperson said: "Community awareness and cooperation are vital. We encourage trailer owners to take part in marking schemes and to report any suspicious activity."

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to prevent rural crime across Mendip and ensure residents in outlying areas remain vigilant.
