Police find Shepton Mallet letter-writer who made accusations about criminal activity
Police say they have found the person responsible for a letter-writing campaign in the Shepton Mallet area after people received anonymous letters containing claims about illegal activities.
The man had been posting handwritten notes through people's doors, making claims about criminal activity, drug use and drug dealing.
Police say they have located the man behind the letters and seized further letters he had intended to send out.
He has been given "clear advice" about his actions - although police have said they will investigate his claims and take action if necessary.
A spokesperson for Mendip Neighbourhood Policing team said: "We have received a number of reports from people receiving a handwritten letter through their door in Shepton Mallet and surrounding villages.
"The note apparently gives information about criminal activity surrounding drug use/dealing.
"Today (Friday, February 3), following a call from a concerned resident, PC Chris Norris from the Shepton Mallet Neighbourhood team was able to catch up with the person posting these notes. Details were taken and the unposted notes were seized. He has been given clear advice about posting such material."
The Mendip team are urging people not to act on the information contained in the letters and say that they will be investigating.
They also urged people to use the correct channels to report a crime to them - by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency only.
