Shepton Mallet Town Council is inviting new traders to join the town's weekly Friday Market. The market runs in the Market Place every Friday from 8.30 am until 1 pm.

The council took over responsibility for the market from Somerset Council in April 2025 and says it wants new traders to help bring it "back to life". A standard 3m by 3m pitch now costs £10 for each market.

Traders who book and attend three consecutive markets can receive their fourth consecutive market free. A further discount is available to those who book and attend for six months, although the council has not published the reduced price.

Young traders who attend four Friday markets can also qualify for a free pitch at the monthly Sunday Market. Details are available by emailing [email protected].

The Friday Market dates back to 1318 and has traditionally combined shopping with a regular social gathering in the town centre. Current stalls sell products including fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, bread, jewellery, plants, pet treats, olive oil and arts and crafts.

Regular traders currently include Harts Natural Seafood, Browns & Daughters Fruit and Veg and Baker in a Beanie. The market also welcomes casual traders selling products such as cakes, preserves, gifts, plants, skincare and pet supplies.

The council is also interested in hearing from buskers, entertainers and people who could run workshops at the market. Businesses wishing to trade must complete the council's Friday Market trader application.

One hour of free parking is available in car parks off Great Ostry Street and Paul Street. Both are within walking distance of the Market Place.
