Police and council team up to tackle dog poo problem in Shepton Mallet

Shepton Mallet residents are being urged to keep an eye out for dog owners who don't clean up after their pets, as police and council officials crack down on rising levels of dog fouling in the town.
Leaflets are being delivered to homes across Shepton to raise awareness of the issue and remind people that dog owners who fail to pick up after their pets could face on-the-spot fines of £100 – or up to £1,000 if taken to court.
The campaign comes after increasing complaints from locals about dog mess being left on pavements, in parks, and around public spaces across the town.
Shepton Mallet Neighbourhood Police said they are working with Somerset Council, Neighbourhood Watch and local community groups to tackle the issue.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said:
"Dog fouling is a significant public nuisance that negatively impacts the aesthetic and hygienic quality of communal spaces.
"It is imperative for pet owners to adhere to responsible pet ownership practices, including the prompt removal and proper disposal of their dogs' waste."
