A years-old plan to convert part of Shepton Mallet's historic Amulet Theatre into a retail unit has been withdrawn.

Coxley Developments Ltd submitted the application in November 2021, seeking to repurpose part of the former theatre for retail use. The proposal included converting vacant spaces beneath the stage into a shop, alongside minor external alterations to the building. The plan was seen as a potential way to offset maintenance costs while adding to the town's shopping options.

However, despite the application being submitted separately to an earlier plan for converting the site into seven flats, it has now been formally withdrawn as of 31 January 2025.

Over the years, multiple redevelopment plans for the Amulet Theatre have been proposed with a focus on maintaining community use, yet none have come to fruition.

Community-led restoration efforts underway

At the same time, a community-driven initiative is gaining momentum to restore the Amulet Theatre and return it to its former role as a cultural hub for Shepton Mallet. Originally opened in 1974 as 'The Centre' and gifted by the Showering Family, the theatre has been a cornerstone of the town's arts scene. Since transitioning to private ownership in 2011, public access has been limited, but ambitious plans are now in place to revitalise the venue.

To support these efforts, the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) has awarded a £10,000 grant for a professional project viability study, ensuring that the restoration plans are sustainable. An additional £10,000 from the Community Shares Booster Fund will provide expert guidance on establishing a community business model, including legal registration and launching a community share issue.

Central to the project is a community consultation process aimed at gathering local input to shape the theatre's future use.

Plans for the venue include:

  • Immediate Use: Once the building is safe, it will host limited activities and events while fundraising continues.
  • Community Hub: The ground floor will be used for various community activities, supporting groups such as the Snowdrop Festival and Make The Sunshine.
  • Quality Performances: A diverse programme, including theatre, cinema, and live music, will be hosted in the 270-seat auditorium, with two multi-arts festivals annually.
  • Café/Bar: A small café/bar will operate during performances and events, designed to complement existing local businesses.
