A new planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council, proposing the conversion of several agricultural barns at Beeches Farm in Batcombe into nine new homes. The site, located on Cockpit Lane, is currently part of a working farmyard, but if the plans go ahead, the existing barns would be transformed into a mix of two, three, and four-bedroom properties.

The proposed development includes one four-bed, five three-bed, and three two-bed homes, making use of seven of the barns currently on the site. The remaining buildings that are unsuitable for residential use are slated for demolition to create additional garden space, parking, and outdoor areas for future residents.

According to the application, the project aims to maintain the character and historic charm of the original barns while adapting them to modern residential use. The changes to the barns will be kept minimal, with the focus being on retaining the rural feel of the buildings and their surroundings.

The developers have already completed structural assessments for the barns, which confirm that they are in a suitable condition for conversion. The plans also include provisions for parking and access, ensuring that the new homes would be well-integrated into the rural community.

If approved, the development could help provide much-needed housing in the area, while also preserving the look and feel of Batcombe's historic farm buildings.

The application is currently under consideration by Somerset Council, and local residents are invited to submit their comments and feedback through the council's planning portal.
