A planning application has been submitted for an extra Portakabin classroom to be installed at St Paul's Junior School in Shepton Mallet.

The application for temporary planning permission for the installation of a Portakabin to be used as additional classroom space for a period of three years at the school in Paul Street was submitted by head teacher Chris Partridge.

In the application to Mendip District Council, the school says they have an urgent need for additional classroom space to separate students with additional teaching requirements so that they can focus on them without distractions from other students.

If approved, the temporary facility will require groundworks to install foundation piers and electrical connections to the building.

The site falls into a conservation area but there are no trees on the site with Tree Preservation Orders on them that will be impacted or any other trees that will be impacted by this development.

The area of the development site is located in the north east corner of the school site. The school says this area offers the best available and accessible space for all those who wish to use it.

The proposed Portakabin building is sited on a grassed area on the school site. No other landscaping is proposed with this application.

The application says the Portakabin building has been chosen as a result of the flexible solution it provides.

It can be installed quickly enabling St Paul's to begin using the specifically fitted out building much more quickly than a traditional build, and it can easily be removed from site with little impact to the surrounding environment.
