Mobile phone thefts plunge in Somerset — but Shepton Mallet still leads in numbers

Mobile phone thefts across Somerset have dropped dramatically in recent years — but Shepton Mallet still tops the list of towns where the most cases have occurred.
Avon and Somerset Police data show that in 2019 there were 31 reported thefts of mobile phones and accessories. By 2024 that figure had fallen to 5, and just 2 have been recorded so far in 2025 — an 84% drop overall since 2019.
However, across the full seven‑year period, Shepton Mallet recorded 35 thefts — more than any other Somerset town — followed by Taunton (23) and Bridgwater (16). Smaller numbers were reported in Yeovil, Pilton and Frome.
The vast majority of cases remain unsolved. Of the 119 incidents logged between 2019 and August 2025, only seven resulted in a caution or a suspect being identified. Just one case led to a conviction in a magistrates' court.
The sharpest declines began after 2022, when cases dropped from 31 to 23, before plunging to 5 in 2024. Police say stronger prevention efforts and community awareness have played a role.
Despite the significant drop, officers advise residents to stay vigilant. Theft remains a risk — particularly in areas like Shepton Mallet, where higher historic numbers have been recorded.
