Somerset Council has announced plans to replace ageing traffic lights at a key intersection in Shepton Mallet, a project that forms part of the council's county-wide signals recovery programme.

The traffic lights at the Charlton Road crossroads, where the A37 meets the A361, are set to be replaced after reaching the end of their functional lifespan.

The council's signals recovery team will host a public drop-in session to discuss the scheme on Monday, 15 January, from 4-6pm at the Council Chamber in the Shape Mendip building, Shepton Mallet. Residents are encouraged to attend, with directions and parking information available at the site.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's Lead Member for Transport and Digital, stressed the necessity of the works. "This work has to be carried out, doing nothing isn't an option. Sooner or later these signals will fail and that is going to cause delays and major disruption for residents and road users," he said. He acknowledged potential traffic impacts but assured that the team would use smart technology to monitor and control traffic, aiming to minimise delays.

The replacement project starts on Monday, 22 January, and is expected to conclude this summer. During this period, temporary traffic lights will be operational. The new signals promise enhanced efficiency, eco-friendliness, and improved traffic flow, along with safer access for pedestrians and cyclists. The project also includes resurfacing significant road stretches upon completion.

Residents unable to attend the drop-in session can direct their queries to [email protected]. Further information about the signal refurbishment programme is available online, and travel updates can be followed via @TravelSomerset on social media platforms and the Somerset Council website.
