Local animal sanctuary seeks help for urgent fencing

A small animal sanctuary near Wells is appealing for help as it urgently seeks funding to replace deteriorating fencing.
Pear Tree Farm Animal Sanctuary, in Yarley, is a volunteer-run charity caring for more than 80 rescued animals including pigs, horses, goats, sheep and poultry. The team says much of its fencing is now in poor condition, with broken posts and weakened wire creating potential safety risks.
Emily Williams, who volunteers for the sanctuary, said: "We're really worried about the state of our fencing.
"It's something we've managed for as long as we can, but it's now reaching the point where it poses a real risk to the animals' safety."
The sanctuary is aiming to raise around £1,000 to cover essential materials including posts, wire and fixings. Local tradespeople have already offered their labour free of charge, meaning any money raised will go directly towards the materials needed for the work.
Emily added: "We've been incredibly lucky to have skilled local tradies offer to help us with the work.
"Now we just need support with the materials to make it happen."
The sanctuary says it has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals since opening in 2018, and has helped more than 7,500 animals over that time.
As well as providing lifelong care to rescued animals, the team says it also plays an active role in the local community. Around 500 visitors come through the sanctuary each year from across Somerset, and it works with local schools and organisations, including supporting young people with learning difficulties through hands-on experiences with animals.
The team is now appealing to local businesses and members of the public for support.
Anyone wanting to help can contact the sanctuary by email at [email protected] or donate through the fencing appeal fundraising page.
