National Highways is advising drivers to plan in advance and allow a little extra time for their journeys ahead of overnight resurfacing work on the M5 Avonmouth Bridge.

Resurfacing starts on the southbound carriageway tonight between junctions 18 and 19 and during the work three lanes will be closed, with one lane remaining open, between 10pm and 6am on weeknights only.

Work will conclude on the southbound carriageway on Tuesday, 11 October when resurfacing will be switched to the northbound side, with the same arrangements in place until 28 October.

Outside the 10pm to 6am closures, the bridge will be open as usual during the day, and while the overnight work is being carried out, southbound M49 traffic will be diverted via St Brendan's roundabout to join the M5 southbound.

Andrew Gale, National Highways' Service Manager, said: "We're minimising disruption by carrying out the work overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest, we advise people to add a little extra time for their journeys and thank all drivers in advance for their co-operation and patience."

Drivers can obtain up-to-the-minute travel information on local radio, the @HighwaysSWEST Twitter feed, by phoning the National Highways Information Line on 0300 123 5000 or by accessing the website: www.trafficengland.com
