Shepton Mallet’s newly restored Victorian drinking fountain, ready to be unveiled after years of being out of service.

Shepton Mallet's Victorian-era drinking fountain, a beloved but long-neglected feature of the Market Place, is set to make a triumphant return this Friday, 27th September, at 11am. After being dry for years, the iconic fountain will flow again, thanks to a meticulous restoration project that has taken both time and expertise.

The Grade II listed fountain, first believed to have been inaugurated back in 1868, has seen its fair share of history. But in recent decades, it fell into disuse – until now. Funded by the Drinking Fountain Association and spearheaded by the Shepton Mallet Town Council, the restoration brings this cherished landmark back to life.

What makes this project special is not just a lick of paint but the complex behind-the-scenes work needed to modernise the fountain's internal workings to meet current Water Regulations.

Balancing the need to preserve its Victorian charm while upgrading its functionality was no small feat, requiring the expertise of local specialists. Originally kick-started in 2021 with groundwork by Bristol Water, the fountain has been fitted with a push-button tap and a protective shroud to ensure the water is safe to drink. In a nod to its past, there's even talk of reinstating the overflow system that once filled a dog bowl at the base – a charming detail that brings history and modern utility together.

In a statement, a council spokesperson said, "We are excited to see this important part of Shepton Mallet's history brought back to life, providing fresh drinking water for the community to enjoy once again."

So, if you're in Shepton Mallet this Friday, make sure to stop by the Market Place. Be one of the first to take a sip from this historic fountain and celebrate the return of a piece of the town's Victorian heritage. It's been years in the making, but finally, Shepton's fountain is back in action – and it's ready to flow for generations to come.
