Avon and Somerset Police need help to identify the man and woman pictured, following a telephone banking fraud where the victim was from Shepton Mallet.

The couple were pictured in Bath. The victim of the fraud – a woman in Shepton Mallet – received a call from someone claiming to be from her bank, who was with a police officer.

The "bank official" said they were ringing to notify the victim to advise that her bank card had been stolen and individuals were trying to use it at the bank.

Because it was a poor phone line, the victim, who was in her workplace, asked the caller to call her back on her mobile phone number.

The caller asked for the card details to be confirmed and then requested the PiN code to verify that it was the stolen card that was being used.

The victim then realised later in the day that her bag containing the card was missing and that she had during the confusion given the card details over the phone, believing her card was in the bag, which she thought she had with her.

A police spokesperson said: "We are conducting enquiries into the incident and are keen to speak to the man and woman pictured.

"We would like either of them - or anyone that recognises them - to contact us, quoting reference

"We would advise that police and banks will never ask members of the public to give out personal details, such as bank account numbers or PIN numbers over the phone or send a courier to collect bank cards or money.

"We advise people not to discuss their finances with anyone calling you out of the blue, even if they claim to be a police officer or representative from the bank.

"Genuine callers will be happy for you to make an appointment to visit them at a branch of the bank or police station."
