Fire crews were called to a commercial building in Castle Cary just before 3.30am yesterday after a battery powered flexi forklift caught fire.

Fire control received a call from the site alerting them to the fire that had broken out inside the building. Staff were evacuated at the time of the call.

Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service sent three pumping appliances to tackle the blaze. Once the fire was extinguished crews continued to cool the battery and used a thermal imaging camera to check the temperature. The battery was then removed from the machine to outside in the open air where crews continued to cool it and monitor temperatures.

The forklift machine was 100 per cent damaged by the fire, which was deemed accidental.
