Make the Sunshine is a community interest company based in Shepton Mallet with a mission - to bring the community together through fun and friendly creative experiences.
Each month they run fun, creative sessions aimed at older adults, which feature a professional performance (previous performers include opera singers, theatre companies, and Flamenco and Bollywood dancers!)
Each session also includes tea and delicious homemade cake and the option of trying out a beginner friendly craft.
The next session takes place on Thursday 13 th July, 10:30 – 12:30 at Paul Street Community Centre in Shepton Mallet, and features singer Ben Dain-Smith who will come and entertain everyone with songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s and he welcomes a sing-a-long with his acoustic guitar.
There will also be a homemade cream tea.
Sessions are very friendly and informal and no experience is required. Participants can join in with any element they like and are welcome to come to all or part of the sessions. On average about 24 people come along each month – the sessions are made possible through support from Shepton Mallet Town Council and Somerset Community Foundation.
Many members say that although they didn't know anyone when they joined, they quickly found friendship. When asked what they enjoyed about the sessions one member said "they are just so fun – I look forward to them every month. Its so important to have something to look forward to"
Another said: "Creative communities has lifted my spirits and revitalised me – come along!"
Lottie Mason, Outreach Officer for Make the Sunshine said "Reaching more isolated individuals who might face mobility challenges is a huge priority for Make the Sunshine. We have therefore partnered with Mendip Community Transport to offer a drop off and collection service for people in the Shepton area with mobility issues. If you would like to try something new or are keen to change routine do get in touch!"
For those who require assistance during the sessions, carers are encouraged to attend too.
