Evercreech councillor Barry O'Leary has confirmed that Mendip District Council has issued grants to more than 1,000 organisations affected by the coronavirus crisis offering a lifeline to small businesses in both rural settings and in towns.

"For many business, be it food production, the local hairdresser or even Evercreech's chocolate maker this money is a bridge rather than a bailout," said Barry, who is the Cabinet Member for Finance and Enterprise.

Some 3,500 companies across the district will be assisted through the government's measures, including additional reliefs and/or grants, and small businesses are being encouraged to apply now.

Barry said: "Personally I know lots of people who work in small business.

"Getting this money into the local economy is vital. I sought assurance the council is fully staffed up to make these payments out quickly as we near pay day for so many workers and business owners.

"I'm beyond pleased to see this support being delivered locally in Evercreech, a historic working village, and in nearby towns of Shepton Mallet, Frome and Wells.

"I'm glad central government saw the huge advantage of the district council's ability to match these payments to local services and local business.

"We will have difficult times ahead but this help is available, and being delivered by Mendip now. I know the council leader, and every councillor would urge those who have not completed the online form to act now.

"I've reached out to business owners on my own ward reminding them that the application forms are easy to navigate and can be found on Mendip District Council's website as follows www.mendip.gov.uk/businessrates."

· Businesses in the retail, hospitality, and leisure sectors with a rateable value of under £15,000 will receive a grant of £10,000 per property.

· Businesses with a rateable value of between £15,001 and £51,000 will receive a grant of £25,000 per property.
