A building in Shapway Lane, Evercreech, was evacuated yesterday after a lift motor caught fire.

Just before 11am yesterday (August 27), Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call reporting smoke within the property coming from a lift shaft.

Fire control immediately mobilised one fire engine from Shepton Mallet, one fire engine from Glastonbury, one fire appliance from Wells, one aerial ladder platform from Salisbury and a duty officer to attend this incident.

On arrival, the incident commander confirmed a smell of burning within the lift shaft and all persons were accounted for and evacuation was being carried out by onsite staff.

The crews got to work with onsite maintenance team to establish the cause of the burning and to isolate the lift.

After further investigations the incident commander confirmed the source of the smoke was coming from the lift motor.

The crews isolated the lift and monitored the temperature of the motor using one thermal imaging camera.

The incident was handed over to a lift engineer on site.
